ISAT - U Light of Peace: Young People Working To Attain World Peace

The year 2015 is indeed auspicious for Iloilo Science and Technology University or ISAT - U. The institution's status has been elevated to university after a grueling process. At the same time, it has been declared as the first Inner Peace University. To celebrate these achievements, a U Light of Peace was held last June 30, 2015 and with more than a thousand people, mostly students, in attendance. The MiddleWay Meditation Institute - Iloilo, the organizer of the Light of Peace events, headed by its Director, Ven. Burin Thitakusalu, and the university's administration under the leadership of Dr. Raul Muyong, ISAT U's first president, worked together to ensure its success.

Signpost Philippines to Conduct an Advocacy Poster-Making Contest

Signpost Philippines Inc. (formerly Signpost International, Inc.) is an independent NGO that works hand in hand with the people and empowers them to take an active role in the transformation and development of their respective communities. To help create an awareness regarding various social concerns, we will have an on-the-spot advocacy poster making contest on August 19, 2014 at the Activity Center of SM City, Mandurriao, Iloilo City. There will be three different categories namely Elementary, High School and Open Categories. The selected entries will be used as advocacy posters that will be utilized as information and education materials in the community.

That is exactly what happened when Signpost Philippines, Inc. gave recognition to their sponsored children who just graduated from their respective schools and those who excelled in their studies. The Recognition Program for school year 2013-2014 was held last June 21, 2014 in Brgy. San Juan, Molo, Iloilo City.

Signpost Philippines Inc. will soon implement another project for the people in Brgy. San Juan in the district of Molo, Iloilo City. Dubbed as Rain for Growth in San Juan, Philippines, it will be funded by the Big Lottery International Communities Fund of UK and will be launched in the latter part of July 2014. This partnership was facilitated by Signpost International which is also based in UK.

For bargain hunters like me, just hearing that 168 is here in Iloilo City was indeed a good news. Whenever I go to Manila, I would drop by 168 and get something for my family and other items that I might be able to resell. Thus, I told myself that I really have to go there today, not tomorrow but really today.I asked a friend to go with me and off we went to check out the place.

The newest shopping place, 168, is located in Iznart St. The area where it can be found is where Allegro Theater used to be. It is sandwiched between Chowking Iznart and the ukay-ukay place. It is very easy to find since one can see a lot of balloons and huge flower arrangements at the entrance.

Power Failures...Again?

It was a short-lived reprieve from power failures. Why did I assume that it would be the norms in Iloilo City? I'm in for a harsh reality because it is back.

Power failures are back in vengeance. Due to what reason, I don't know. At first it was less than an hour but then it became longer and longer. Saturday was the pits. It lasted for a day. I just justified it by saying that it might have been a result of the weather disturbance. Whatever the reason though, it's time to prepare those generator sets,candles, rechargeable lamps, etc.

Let's just hope that one of these days we would really have a power-failure city and province. Dream on!?

Iloilo City had been hit by frequent brown-outs for several years now. This year, however, is really the pits. It seems like it has become a daily occurrence. The duration has become even longer. Do the Ilonggos deserve this kind of fate?

Mang Inasal...Kumbinsing!

The very first time I heard about Mang Inasal was when one of my friends came to visit me and told me that he's working there. He raved about it but I still didn't go there on my own. I mean, I've had my fill of chicken barbecue and was not in the mood to have any.

Then one time, my family was invited to dine out with some relatives and the place was Mang Inasal. So off we went to their very first branch which was located behind The Robinson's Place (or maybe that venue is still part of Rob). Anyway, there I was with about twenty family members.

Impression? I liked the design of the place. Then? I liked the food. We had our fill of the juicy chicken barbecue, chicken skin, sinigang, halo halo and the likes. Then the rice was wrapped in banana leaves just like in the past.

You bet that wasn't the last time that I went there.

Now, Mang Inasal has so many branches than I can count but I still love going there. One thing that I truly love is that I can have as much rice without having to pay extra. For somebody who's a voracious eater, that is really something.

What more, they sponsor a lot of civic activities and I truly like that. As their tagline says, truly "Kumbinsing."

Another Resto Opens!

Just like most Ilonggos, food is a passion for me. That's why the news that another restaurant will open just near my place was really very welcome. I mourned the closing of the Korean restaurant, Rendezvous, in Jalandoni St. just this year. Good thing though that there will be another located in the same street. This time it's a Chinese restaurant.

I saw the leaflets distributed as part of the promotions of Kusina Tsina. It included a vicinity map and the menu. Mmmm! The usual Chinese delectable food are listed.

The opening date? I heard that it will open on May 15. That would be today here in Iloilo. That would mean another culinary feast for me and another dent in my pocket.

Dunkin' Donuts in Iloilo

Way back in the early '90s the first store of Dunkin' Donuts opened in Iznart St., Iloilo City. Beside it was a theater which has long been closed down. Ilonggos would line up just to partake of the tasty doughnuts. The queue would be several meters long and yet the customers would patiently wait just to have one or two of these delectable treats. This phenomenon went on for several weeks and the line tapered to a more manageable and shorter one after a while. It being the only 24 hours food chain at that time, it was a favorite hang-out place of those who are into nocturnal activities. That Dunkin' Donuts branch still exists despite the emergence of several other branches and similar stores.
